Why do people celebrate CNY

A long time ago, a story was told from generation to generation, mostly kids, every night of Chinese New Year, a monster that looked like a lion called Nian appeared somewhere in China. It was told that if the children did not sleep, Nian will come to eat them. Some people said it was just to help children sleep. One day, Nian appeared and the people saw him, all were afraid of it and stayed at home. An old man came to one of the houses and requested for something to eat. The woman in the house gave food to the old man to eat. The old man was thankful for the woman's generosity and repay for her kindness by showing the woman how to scare away Nian. The old man put firecrackers and red papers on the door and lit the firecrackers  and it produced loud sounds and lights. When everybody heard the noise, they saw Nian running away frightened. The people thanked the old man and they put on red papers and firecrackers to scare away Nian every year. Some people believed, some don't, what do you think?
